Get things done AND keep an eye on your little one!

When you find out you’re pregnant the nursery is one of the first things you start to plan. Designing Ben and Bella’s nurseries was so much fun, but functionality of the room was my main priority. Now that Ben is older and we are back in the baby stage with our newborn, Bella, I know what wasn’t practical, and have a list of essentials for her nursery. We moved only two weeks before Bella was born so we aren’t completely settled in our new home yet, but setting up the nursery was one of the first things we accomplished. I needed to have her bedroom ready, and have a good monitoring system in place so I could keep working even after she was born. As an entrepreneur I don’t make money unless I am working, so using nap times to get stuff done is critical to my business. So I set up her nursery and equipped it with the best baby monitor from Panasonic.

Panasonic Long Range Baby Monitor

It’s worth it to splurge on a good quality baby monitor. For both Bella and Ben I used the Panasonic Long Range Video Baby Monitor which has two-way talk, remote tilt/pan/zoom, lullaby and temperature sensors. I was so impressed with it the first time around, I didn’t think twice and knew I would use the same monitor for Bella.

I chose this monitor because it’s virtually unhackable, which is something every parent worries about. It’s more secure than a wifi enabled device so you never have to worry about hackers spying on your children. It has incredible video quality and the long range (up to 1500 feet) is critical in a larger home (we just moved out of a condo) and especially at the cottage!

The long range is especially important to me as an entrepreneur who works from home. As I will not be taking any time off for maternity leave, I need to know that I can keep an eye on my newborn when I’m working in my office or spending one-on-one time playing with Ben in his playroom. 1500 feet is more than the length of four football fields, so I feel good knowing that anywhere I go in the house (or yard!) I’ll be able to keep an eye on Bella in her nursery.

When shopping for a baby monitor you’ll want to make sure it produces good video quality. Night vision cameras can vary in quality but the #PanasonicCanada monitor has a very clear image even in dark rooms.

I always set the monitor up so it’s facing the crib, but another feature I love about the #PanasonicBabyMonitor in particular is the ability to tilt, pan and zoom the camera from the screen. If you’re using the camera in a bigger room or playroom, or if your child is old enough to climb out of their crib, this feature is essential for keeping an eye on them from a distance.

There is also a temperature setting so you can make sure the room doesn’t get too hot or cold, which is an important feature especially for newborns. And I love the two-way talk and lullaby mode for calming the baby without entering their room. You can control all of these features from the palm of your hands through the easy-to-use monitor screen, and it’s worry-free because the battery has a very long life span!

What else is important in a nursery?

Natural Light

Ben’s old room didn’t have any windows so it was very dark, but in our new house both of my children’s rooms have a lot of natural light. I have found natural light helps establish better sleep routines, as their developing minds recognize darkness means sleep time and light means it’s time to wake up (circadian rhythms). If you don’t have window coverings, I also recommend blackout blinds for daytime naps.

Plants

Live plants, if you get the right kind, can help purify the air in a nursery. I like to use varieties like snake plants and prayer plants for both of my children’s nurseries because they clean the air, absorb the most amount of carbon dioxide and emit pure oxygen. They are also very easy to care for!

Quality Bedding

Look for natural fibers when shopping for bedding for the nursery, for example organic cotton sheets. Bella’s crib mattress is made of horsehair. I originally bought it for Ben to help alleviate his allergies and regulate his body temperature. But horse hair also has moisture-wicking qualities, and is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal for a healthy sleep environment.
